I have been wanting to make a quilt for my oldest son for a long time
but had not been able to find fabric or a pattern that I liked. He is a
musician, a college senior double majoring in Performance (cello) and
Music Theory and Composition. I was looking for something musically
themed but masculine.
In November, I was making the
rounds of local quilt shops and found just what I had been looking for -
beautiful, music themed fabric in red, black, gray, and white. The
quilt shop owner had made the fabric up into a quilt and posted the
instructions here on her blog, so I bought the fabric and headed home.
Here are a few closeups of some of the fabrics - there are 10 different fabrics in all.
The
quilt consists of 5" squares of fabric alternating with 4 patches. The
construction is simple - the arrangement of the blocks is what makes
the quilt so outstanding.
I wanted a bigger quilt than
the instructions were for, so I made the finished blocks a bit larger
and made more of them. The finished quilt is 75" x 90".
Here is the finished product - the musician loves it!
P.S. The musician's hands get cold when he practices, so my friend over at Applie's Place knitted these cool "non-phalanges" for him to wear. He loves them, too!
